The PGA Grand Slam of Golf lost much of its sheen with defending champion Tiger Woods pulling out of the Bermuda event to spend the time with his wife Elin and his new-born daughter.
Woods, who won the title last year, became father of a baby girl in June, a day after the iconic American finished second in the US Open.
Announcing his decision to skip the Bermuda event, Woods said
Given my new personal obligations it’s important I take some extended time off and spend it with my family.
PGA of America president Brian Whit understands the reason behind Woods’ pull-out decision and said
While we are disappointed that the world’s number one player will not be able to join us this year in Bermuda, we certainly understand and respect his decision to be with his family.
Woods’ place would now go to last year’s runners-up Jim Furyk though that won’t compensate for the absence of the American who bagged six titles in 15 starts in this season so far.
Other golfers in the four-player field are this year’s Major champions Zach Johnson (Masters), Angel Cabrera (US Open) and Padraig Harrington (Open), who would tee off at the Mid Ocean Club in Bermuda on October 16 and 17.
