Defending champion Junior Witter showered a rain of punches on Vivian Harris before knocking out the former WBA champion in the seventh round to retain his WBC light welterweight crown in Doncaster.

Harris, the Guyanese pugilist based in New York, began well with his formidable jabs keeping Witter on his toes. Witter, however, was soon in his elements and grew in confidence after he got a hang of the things in the ring and went on to settle the issue in the seventh round.

Celebrating after successfully defending the title, the British boxer had word of praise for his opponent too. Witter said

I’m absolutely ecstatic. But what a fighter Harris is. I connected with some really big punches but he kept coming back but in the end I was able to finish him off.

I landed extremely devastating power out there. I had a lot of niggling injuries coming into the fight so it was very pleasing to win it like this.

Four inches shorter that his opponent, Witter took time to settle into a rhythm. After gauging his opponent, Witter knocked down Harris in the fourth round but Harris managed to get back on his feet and resume his battle.

Wily Witter’s bag of tricks proved just too much for Harris, who did give glimpse of his brilliance that made him such a formidable boxer but the day simply belonged to Witter.
