Formula 1 returns to the Fuji speedway this weekend after 20 years. The Fuji speedway was the venue for the original Japanese grand prix in 1976.
The scenic race track, with Mount Fuji as a backdrop has been remodeled and will be an unknown quantity to most teams. In the past few years, the high speed, Honda owned Suzuka racetrack had been the venue for the Japanese Grand prix. The shift in venue to the Toyota owned track is seen as another sign of shift in power between the Japanese manufacturers following an extremely disappointing season for Honda on the track.
Recent off track events have handed the constructors’ title to Ferrari, but the competition for the driver’s title is wide open with Lewis Hamilton leading on 97 points from Fernando Alonso (95), Kimi Raikkonen (84) and Felipe Massa (77). All of them still have a chance of winning.
Kimi Raikkonen has been buoyed by a Ferrari 1-2 at Spa and believes he is still in with a very good chance of being crowned world champion.
The race weekend however promises to be unpredictable with weather forecasters predicting cold conditions with an 85% chance of rain.
