World’s No.1 dominating the golfing sport, Tiger Woods bids a bye-bye to the $63 million, U.S. PGA Tour’s inaugural playoffs. A four-week postseason showdown that begins Thursday will also miss five other eligible players, reducing the field to 138.
Woods had said that he was physically and mentally tired after winning the PGA Championship two weeks ago and the World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational on Aug. 5. Under U.S. PGA Tour rules, players are only required to compete in 15 events each season to maintain their membership. But I guess woods is out of it for now!
The current scenario however provides a rare opportunity for other golfers to lay a mark and surpass the leader on the points list in pursuit of the $10 million grand prize at the end of the Tour’s lucrative event. Woods will now place himself, no further than seventh place heading into next week’s Deutsche Bank Championship.
Ranked fifth in the world, Australia’s Adam Scott said, “This is our chance to get ahead and have him chase us. We’re pretty used to chasing him. Maybe we can put a little pressure on him.”
Still, it doesn’t mean that the tournament is eclipsed by one man’s absence as the mights of Adam Scott, Woody Austin, Padraig Harrington and few other golfers would definitely fashion a breathtaking contest. Moreover, a win by a player ranked 59th or better would gain 9,000 points and that could move the golfer into first place at the FedEx Cup standings.
