Beijing Olympics may be more than a year ahead, but, Chinese authorities are leaving no stone unturned to make it a memorable event. After a dry run few months back of the inaugural ceremony, China has set out tightening measures on the storage and safe handling of guns, ammunition, explosives and radioactive materials in a bid to secure a safe Olympics in 2008, the capital’s police chief said.
Beijing will no longer approve commercial shooting ranges and hunting ranges, and sports authorities are required to reduce the number of shooting ranges for training purposes and cut down the number of guns.
The public visiting places like the museums and exhibition halls that fail to safely display weapons will be asked to remove them.
Recognizing very well China’s image on the world map, as one of the fastest progressing nations, the authorities here are not taking any chances.
Gun producers and sellers and professional storing agencies of guns would be required to reduce their guns and ammunition. Also, guns owned by organizations that are engaged in sport shooting would not be increased.
Private ownership of guns is forbidden in China which ensures one less aspect to be worried about by the police.
These measures spare no one. Even the districts and counties administered by Beijing are also ordered to cut down on the number of storehouses of explosives, toxic chemicals and radioactive material.
And, if such dangerous articles are lost or stolen due to a lack of management, the organizations and manager will be prosecuted and their permits revoked.
With the Chinese police enforcing such stringent rules, we hope and expect an incident-free Beijing Olympics.
