Maria Sharapova has struggled this year in Grand Slams because of injuries and poor form but looks like she is determined to defend US Open title, which she won last year. Sharapova, wearing her much-publicized new red dress, was in ominous form as she dominated Italy’s Roberta Vinci through out the match. Such was the domination of Sharapova that Vinci only manage to win only one game in the match.
Sharapova defeated Vinci 6-0, 6-1 in straight sets to enter the second round of US Open. She will now face Australia’s Casey Dellacqua in the second round. After the victory, Sharapova said,
It’s great to be back, to step on to this court at night - just feel the vibes and be on the centre court again. Every corner I turn here I get goosebumps. When you come back to the place you won your second major, it’s incredible. And to come in to defend my title when I am healthy, that’s the best part.
Former US Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova and Martina Hingis also won their first round matches very easily.
