This will be Russia’s second time hosting the Olympics as they had previously hosted the 1980 Summer Games. As an Olympic power, Russia has bagged 293 Winter Game Medals. Other nations, like Salzburg, Austria and Republic of Korea were also in the bid to host the finale.
The 2010 Winter Olympics were previously awarded to Vancouver, thus allowing Canada to host its second Winter Olympics as well. Vancouver will be the largest city to host a Winter Olympics, with a population of more than two-million people.
With the increasing audiences worldwide, the Winter Olympic games are gaining much of the popularity within countries that do not have a strong winter sports tradition. As a result of its global appeal, it seems likely that international participation in the Winter Olympics will also increase and also promises to be a grand spectacle in times to come.
