The Yankees and Red Sox rivalry take on a new dimension in ways never witnessed in the American League’s long history. The Red’s are roaring past the Yankees taking their biggest division lead in two decades into the final regular- season showdown.
The Yankees lost to the Toronto Blue Jays 2-1 a day ago to fall 5 1/2 games behind the Red’s in a full season since 1986. Yankees having won the division for nine straight years, Red’s will be looking to extend its lead as two big pitching matchups remain during this weekend’s series. Although, Yankees will further try to cut into the game lead.
Former manager for the New York Mets, Steve Phillips said:
The Red Sox are in a better position, obviously because the standings say so, but also because of the depth of the pitching. That’s one area they have a distinct advantage over the Yankees and they’ve had it all season long.
The Yankees, who used 13 different starting pitchers this season, have relied on Chien-Ming Wang and Andy Pettitte. Red’s pitching staff, led by 18-game winner Josh Beckett, allowed the second-fewest runs in MLB followed by Tim Wakefield, Daisuke Matsuzaka and Curt Schilling in rotation.
