It has indeed been a surprise choice by Pittsburgh Pirates to pick Huntington. The newely appointed Pirates president desired a manager with an unwavering passion for baseball and a vision of success plus a drive to accomplish it. In Coonelly’s eyes, no one fitted it better, than Huntington.
Huntington, replaces Dave Littlefield, who was fired this month after failing to produce a winning season since being hired in 2001. The Pirates are finishing their 15th consecutive losing season, one short of the major-league record. The Pirates are in last place in the National League Central Division and tied with Florida for the worst record at 66-90.
New Pirates President, Coonelly said:
With Neal, I found all those attributes. I felt that he was the ideal candidate, as he has had a lot of different experiences. He has been in the field, seen the players, evaluated the players and has also been in the office where the evaluation takes place and the data is analyzed.
Becoming organization’s 12th general manager, Huntington has spent the past 10 years with the Cleveland Indians, last serving as special assistant to the general manager.
