The verdict is finally there, as McLaren have been fined an unprecedented $100m and stripped of all past and future championship points in the 2007 constructors’ championship for using leaked Ferrari data. However, drivers Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton escaped punishment. The pronouncement of the FIA World Motor Sport Council in Paris undoubtedly shapes Ferrari’s way to be crowned champions ahead of this weekend’s Belgian Grand Prix.
The FIA statement said:
The WMSC have stripped Vodafone McLaren Mercedes of all constructor points in the 2007 FIA Formula One world championship and the team can score no points for the remainder of the season.
Following the recent retirement of long dominated Michael Schumacher it was the talented Lewis Hamilton who emerged as his likely successor and took on the charge. Still, the ongoing bitterness between Hamilton and his team-mate Fernando Alonso is not yet in speaking terms at the top of the title table. The Spaniard is just three points behind Hamilton in the drivers’ championship with four grand prix remaining. Furthermore, McLaren’s fallout of its participation in next year’s championship clearly gives an impression that the worst-case scenario has completely wrecked the Formula One.
