Justine Henin reasserted her position as the number one female tennis player by overcoming a stiff challenge posed by Serbia’s Jelena Jankovic to win the Roger’s Cup in Toronto.
The Belgian defeated Jankovic in straight sets 7-6 7-5, however, it was a very hard fought one. The first set was very tightly competed for and eventually went into tiebreak that Henin won 7-3.

The second set was heavily loaded in Jankovic’s favour with her leading at four games to Henin’s two but Henin bravely fought back to level it 4-4. Then she went up 5-4 and had a match point on Jankovic’s serve to finish off the match. Jankovic, however, held on to tie the match at 5-5. The next game was the most closely contested and saw Jankovic squander 6 break points to finally gift it to Henin. Henin made no mistakes and closed out the match in the next game winning the set 7-5. She, however, needed 6 match points to win the final game.
This amazing form and skill displayed by the petite and slightly built Henin is refreshing since it proves that being 6 foot plus tall and muscular is not a pre-requisite to be successful in women’s tennis.
This is Henin’s 35th career title and her seventh consecutive win over Jankovic. With Venus and Serena Williams not exactly at their peak fitness levels, Henin becomes the clear favorite for the last Grand Slam event of the year, the US Open which starts later this month.
