Italians must have been thinking of surpassing the 83-0 score they recorded against Portugal last year, but ironically the tournament newcomer looked a determined and well-organized side to prove that they were not going to be easily rolled over by anyone. It was a similar passion and grit they showed in their honorable defeats by Scotland and New Zealand.
Azzurri’s got off to a perfect start, with Andrea Masi scoring early after finding a penetrating line to cut through the Portuguese defense. He eventually, failed to cross again in the first half despite dominating possession. However, Portugal battled back as David Penalva scored a deserved try on 33 minutes. But it was Italy all the way, who slowly regrouped after the break and the late tries from Bergamasco and Masi sealed an unconvincing win. Scrum-half Alessandro became the first Italian to win 100 caps after winning a penalty for his side.
Italy now remains third in the group led by top-ranked, All Blacks and need to defeat second-place Scotland to advance to the quarterfinals for the first time in six tournaments. Meanwhile, Portugal powerless of reaching the next phase will play its last game of the tournament against Romania.
