amelie mauresmo

Comeback seems tough for Amelie Mauresmo as the former World No.1 having two Grand Slam singles title to her name looses at Stuttgart.

Well known for her powerful one-handed backhand and her strong net play, the Frenchwoman sustained the attacking game of Elena Dementieva in the first set before finding her rhythm but all in vain, with the score ending 6-2, 7-5 in favor to the Russian.

A visibly disappointed, Amelie Mauresmo ranked 12th at the WTA rankings, said,

I just didn’t play well in the first set and playing someone like Elena you need rhythm from the start. On the whole I was playing much better than two weeks ago in Peking. But it simply isn’t my year. The real low-point was my appendicitis operation in March. Now I need match practice to get back to form.

The $650,000 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix also witnessed the Australian Open champion, Serena Williams opening her campaign with an easy 6-0, 6-0 go over the Czech Republic’s Zuzana Ondraskova, while defending champion Nadia Petrova also progressed to the second round. Earlier in the day, Poland’s Agnieszka Radwanska beat France’s Wimbledon finalist Marion Bartoli 0-6, 6-2, 6-1.
