Competing in the 2007 Championships at Wimbledon, Justine Henin is hoping to complete a career Grand Slam.

Henin, not having won Wimbledon, made yet another stride forward, to step closer to the title with a physically and emotionally demanding 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 victory over the two-times champion Serena Williams on the Centre Court yesterday evening.

Currently, both being the topmost players in the world, the quarter-final match was considered as a decider of the title.

Henin has twice been beaten in the final, losing to Amelie Mauresmo last year and to Venus Williams in 2001. It appears that right time has come to grab her maiden Wimbledon.

It became evident from Serena’s backhand shorts that injury concerns was the root-cause of toppling from the crucial match. But despite the bitter situations she engaged in some fearsome baseline exchanges with Henin. Regaining her rhythm and bouncing back in the second set seemed somewhat mind-boggling. Playing a very high-quality game, probably her best knocks, finally ended in the third set.

Henin’s combination of defence, power and occasional feather-light touch always gave her the decisive edge.

Jubilant Henin goes through to face Marion Bartoli in the semi-finals, enjoying an upper edge over the Frenchwoman, as she had initially been over-powered by Henin in the semi-finals at Eastbourne.
