Lewis Hamilton’s probability of becoming the Formula One world champion in his rookie season once again got a stagger with fresh evidence surfacing that his team McLaren Mercedes, may have used 2007 championship rival Ferrari’s technical secrets on their cars. Ferrari currently trail McLaren by 11 points in the constructors’ standings. Earlier too, McLaren had got off scot-free facing similar charges after the July inquiry due to lack of sufficient evidence.

The latest twist in the spying saga takes a bitter twist for Hamilton along with his team who has been trying to heal the internal wounds over the rift between their two drivers, as they prepare for the Italian Grand Prix in Monza this weekend and the Belgian Grand Prix in Spa, a week later. The team also needs to maintain focus at the racecourse despite what decisions are reached in Paris. With five races to go, Hamilton still has a five-point lead over his teammate, Fernando Alonso.

Right now it’s time to wait on and see what the evidence is all about and how thoroughly it is tested on both parties. Furthermore, infringing the fundamental principle of sporting honesty should certainly result in severe sanctions.
