A tyre explosion may have dashed his Turkish GP hopes and reduced his F1 lead to five points, but McLaren driver Lewis Hamilton is buoyant that he can overcome the setback.
Fifteen laps to go and going steady at third place, Hamilton’s tyre exploded at Istanbul Park and eventually he had to be satisfied with a fifth place finish. His teammate Fernando Alonso came third to narrow Hamilton’s Fl lead.
Till the other day, both the drivers were engaged in a feud even though McLaren boss Ron Dennis was quoted as saying in media reports that they have cleared the air and are “back on track”.
Recalling the explosion in Turkey, Hamilton said
Bits started falling off the tyre and it blew. I was lucky not to go into the gravel. With that problem, I think getting fifth place is a good job. You always have setbacks. I am leading by five points - it is not over.
He, however, asserted that it’s not end of all roads for him and he would do everything to compensate for the setback with a scintillating performance in the Italian Grand Prix at Monza on September 9.
Hamilton said
There are some improvements coming, I think in Monza we will be good, I’m not worried about that.
He, however, may find the subsequent races, the last three in Japan, China and Brazil, bit tricky for he has never been to the places.
