Trevor Graham cited the successful and most controversial sprint coaches at the track and field, because athletes trained under him collect gold medals equal to the number of drug suspensions. BALCO steroid scandal the biggest performance-enhancing drug scandal in U.S. sports history sets a further trial for the coach. Consequently, the alleged involvement of elite athletes might surface yet again.
Graham, a one-time mentor of Olympic sprint champions Marion Jones, Tim Montgomery and Justin Gatlin, was indicted last November on charges of lying to federal agents of providing his athletes with performance-enhancing drugs.
While a number of athletes coached by Graham have received suspensions for drug use, he has always denied direct knowledge or involvement. Among athletes Graham has coached, eight have tested positive or received bans for performance enhancing drugs, including six world champions while Tim Montgomery’s World Record in the 100m has since been revoked. The United States Olympic Committee also banned Graham from its training facilities, the first time ever a coach has received such a ban.
