gay centre lets his rivals know who is number oneTyson Gay’s gold-rush continues at the World Athletics Championships in Osaka, Japan. The American, who had won the 100m event outshining world record holder Asafa Powell, struck his second goal of the meet by winning the 200m event.

And the icing on cake was his new meet record of 19.76 seconds, which eclipsed Michael Johnson’s 19.79s, recorded in the 1995 World championship in Sweden.

Usain Bolt ran hard to turn the heat on Gay in the final bend before finishing second with 19.91, while Wallace Spearmon (20.05) came third.

Gay said

It was extremely hard. Usain Bolt gave me a tough run but I held on for a tough victory.

The triumph also saw Gay emulate his idol Maurice Greene who had achieved the feat back in 1999.

Meanwhile, in long jump, Irving Saladino became the first athlete from Panama to win a gold after he cleared 8m 57cm, ahead of European champion Andrew Howe of Italy who jumped 8m 47cm.

Earlier, Australian Jana Rawlinson won the gold in the 400m hurdles, clocking 53.31 seconds and staving off challenge from world record holder Yuliya Pechonkina (53.50) and Anna Jesien (53.92).
