Swiss heavyweight Roger Federer may have won the fourth Wimbledon crown this year to take his Grand Slam tally to eight and continue to remain in the number one position for next couple of months, yet he should not be considered an all-time tennis great. The former world number one John Newcombe of Australia feels so.
Newcombe, the winner of seven Grand Slam titles said,
To be in the top three or four of all time you have to dominate in your era.
So far, Federer has two US Opens, two Australian Opens and four Wimbledons. He is yet to claim a French Open title.
Newcombe feels that Federer should not be put in the highest position because he has not been able to win the French Open and Nadal has only been beating him on clay, he has beaten him and matched him on hard court.
For Newcombe, Pete Sampras is an all-time great tennis player. He has completely dominated an era. He won a record number of Grand Slam titles (14).
Don Budge, Fred Perry, Rod Laver, Roy Emerson and Andre Agassi are the five players to win all four Grand Slam titles at least once.
