Federer rarely looked best on the finale as his counterpart the Serbian, appearing in his first slam final could not capitalize on granted opportunities. The Swiss star trailed by a break in each set but Djokovic faltered at key moments, missing a total of seven set points. At one stage, Djokovic moved to 40-0 and three set points but could not close it out, letting a total of five chances go in a dramatic game.
However, Federer- cashing on his experience of previous grand slam titles and the fine run he is in - came back in the lone break at the end of the third set that enabled him to complete a 7-6, 7-6, 6-4 victory and pick a 2.4million US dollars prize, the largest payout in the history of the sport. No wonder if we find Federer surpassing Sampras by the end of the same Grand Slam next year.
The Serbian had earlier beaten Federer in their last encounter in Montreal in August and the Swiss luckily got relieved to come through the test of nerves by saying:
I think straight sets was a bit brutal for Novak, to be honest. He deserved better than that. He’s had a fantastic run, not only this tournament but the entire year. I told him at the net ‘keep it up.’ We’re going to have many more battles I think.
Conquering a feat of 12 grand slams places Federer just two titles behind Pete Sampras record haul of 14.
