As expected, Roger Federer and Justine Henin have been given the top seedings in the men’s and women’s singles respectively at this year’s Wimbledon tennis championship.
Britain will have its hopes pinned on 20-year-old Andy Murray who has been seeded eighth in men’s singles. Murray’s participation, however, remains shrouded in a cloud of uncertainty as the player struggles to overcome from the wrist injury he had suffered last month after the Hamburg Open.
Defending champion Federer would be out to defend his title again at the All England Club, while Henin, fresh from her French Open triumph, would lead the women section.
Wimbledon follows a unique seeding system in men’s singles where they do take into account current rankings but also consider a player’s grasscourt performance over the last couple of years.
In men’s singles, Rafael Nadal, who beat Federer in the French Open final, is seeded second, followed by Andy Roddick, Novak Djokovic, Fernando Gonzalez and Nikolay Davydenko.
Among the women, Maria Sharapova is second seeded after Henin and the Russian lass is followed by Serbian Jelena Jankovic, Frenchwoman Amelie Mauresmo and Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova.
