Legendary golfer Gary Player is not among them who swear golf is a fair game played only by the gentleman, perfectly decked up for the occasion. In contrast, Player alleged, some of the golfers are dope cheats and at least 10 of them use performance-enhancing drugs.
Player stirred a hornet’s nest with his claims and the nine-time Major title winner sought random testing in golf as well, like it has been done in other games.
Player said
I know for a fact that some golfers are doing it. I would say there are 10 guys taking something. I might be way out. It’s definitely not going to be lower, it might be a hell of a lot more.
He even went on to claim that a couple of players had admitted to him that they took drugs. The 71-year-old legend, however, refused to disclose the identity if those players.
He said
One guy told me - and I took an oath prior to him telling me - but he told me what he did and I could see this massive change in him.
And somebody else told me something I also promised I wouldn’t tell, that verified others had done it.
Player said he was often asked by doctors to take Human Growth Hormone (HGH), which he refused a number of times.
The PGA Tour is not underestimating the danger of dope and is preparing a list of prohibited substances. The European Tour also pledged to put in place a drugs policy by next January.
