serena williams on her way to bangalore 2008 wta win

It was the year’s first tournament for the World Number 11 Serena Williams and she couldn’t have asked for a better fairing than her title win at the WTA Bangalore Open. It wasn’t just her maiden tournament appearance in the country; it was indeed her very first visit.

Serena was seeded 3rd in the tournament, whilst her opponent, Patty Schnyder of Switzerland was seeded 4th. The seeding meant there wasn’t much to choose between the two, yet the experience and the sheer physical strength of the former was enough for her to clinch the title.

Schnyder has had the better of Williams on three of their last four meetings, obviously meaning that it would have been a fiercely competed match but some erratic serving from both of them saw the match ending 7-5, 6-3 in Serena’s favour over an hour and 25 minutes.

Williams pocketed $95,000 and 275 WTA points which augers well for her ranking stakes. Ecstatic over her win Williams quipped:

It was so nice being in India and winning the title made it even better. A week back I was not even sure I will be able to play, so to win my first title of the year makes it a very special visit.

It seems a good year for the Hurricane American and her huge fan base would just hope that she continues to deliver in this fashion to make it a very special year at a fading stage of her career. Hope that she proves me wrong on the ‘fading’ part!
