The Asian Games were marred by tragedy on Thursday when Kim Hyung-chil lost his life in an equestrian event. The South Korean competitor was not able to take the fall during the individual cross-country section and died soon after the crash.
Kim, 47, won silver medal at the 2002 Asian Games and was the oldest rider of the South Korean equestrian team. The heartbreaking incident took place when his horse Bundaberg Black failed to jump the eighth obstacle in the 2,470-meter course in heavy rain at the Doha Racing and Equestrian club.
Doha is passing through a pretty bad weather from last couple of days and authorities have already suspended several events waiting for things to improve, however, the latest incident calls for more safety, especially, in outdoor games. But, Christopher Hodson, vice president of the International Equestrian Federation (IEF), declined that wet conditions led to the tragic incident.
