Philadelphia’s pitcher, Alfonseca is yet again entangled in a spat. While at Chicago Cubs Alfonseca got suspended for five games for hitting an umpire and now it’s Colorado’s Todd Helton. Alfonseca plunked the slugger with two outs in the seventh inning of a game that the Phillies were leading the Rockies, 11-4 as the ball appeared to be heading toward Helton’s face. Fined an undisclosed amount he now receives a four-game suspension by the MLB.
Alfonseca said:
I wasn’t trying to hit him. Helton has been in the big leagues for a long time, and I respect that. He shouldn’t take it personally. I was sorry.
Upset with the punishment, the pitcher denies any wrongdoings and plans to appeal the ban. The Phillies signed him in January 2007. With a 4-1 and a 5.06 ERA in 58 appearances he will perhaps be available for the opener at the crucial weekend series, against the New York Mets.
