Murray appears to inherit Britain’s legacy from the soon retiring Tim Henman. Making a comeback at Rogers Cup three months after sustaining the wrist injury, the Scottish failed to pose an impressive show and dropped to World Number 19. However, on the U.S. hard courts Murray propounds a different game as he advances to reach the third round.

Improving considerably and giving a mixed performance to outlast Jonas Bjorkman for a 5-7 6-3 6-1 4-6 6-1, Murray came through a tense five-set clash to notch a win.

Although a semi-finalist here a decade ago, the Swedish veteran posed to be a stubborn opponent for Murray.

Fans on the sun-baked Grandstand were offered a blistering spectacle. At one stage in the final two sets, Murray seemed to collapse but regained his composure to break back immediately in the fifth set to land him safely in the three hour and 37 minutes ordeal.

Murray’s next opponent will be the Korean Hyung-Taik Lee, who caused a shock by knocking out 14th seed Guillermo Canas. Former champion Andy Roddick suffered a first-set setback but still eased into the third round when Argentina’s Jose Acasuso limped out of the match.
